Flower is still the heart of cannabis — the format everything else is extracted from, and the one where quality differences are easiest to see, smell and taste. It's also where a little knowledge saves the most money: two eighths at the same price can be worlds apart.

Indica, sativa and hybrid — what the labels really mean

The classic shorthand still works as a starting point:

• Indica — associated with body relaxation and evening use
• Sativa — associated with energy, focus and daytime use
• Hybrid — the majority of modern strains, blending both tendencies

The deeper truth: effects come from cannabinoids and terpenes, not the indica/sativa label alone. A "sativa" heavy in myrcene can feel sleepy; a bright, limonene-rich hybrid can feel energizing. How to read the label like a pro

1. THC % is a range, not a score. 20% flower with a loud terpene profile beats bland 30% flower for most people. Chasing the biggest number is the most common rookie mistake.
2. Total terpenes matter. Anything above ~2% total terpenes is aromatic; 3%+ is exceptional.
3. Check the harvest/packaging date. Fresher is better — flower degrades meaningfully after 6–12 months.
4. COA = proof. Every legal California product has a certificate of analysis from a state-accredited lab. The numbers on our cards come from those COAs, not marketing copy.

Formats and quantities

Flower is sold by weight: grams (1g), eighths (3.5g), quarters (7g), halves (14g) and ounces (28g). Eighths are the sweet spot for trying new strains; ounces and "smalls" (smaller buds, same batch) are the value play once you know what you like. Pre-ground and shake serve budget rolling.
