How to Store Vape Carts: Temperature, Travel & Leaks

Vape oil is more stable than flower, but it's not indestructible — heat thins it into leaks, cold thickens it into clogs, and light slowly bleaches the terpenes out. A cart stored badly for one Sacramento summer afternoon in a car can lose more flavor than six months in a drawer.

The three rules
- Room temperature, always — 60–70°F is the sweet spot. Above ~85°F oil thins and seeps past the seals; below ~40°F it thickens and clogs the intake holes. The absolute killer is a parked car in summer — cabin temps hit 130°F+ and will empty a cart through its own airflow holes.
- Upright, mouthpiece up — keeps oil settled on the coil side, away from the air path. Carts stored sideways or upside down for weeks are how mystery leaks happen.
- Dark storage — UV degrades THC into CBN (sleepy, less potent) and flattens terpenes. A drawer or the original box beats a sunny counter.
Traveling with carts
- In the car: glovebox or center console only for the drive — never overnight, never parked in the sun.
- Flying (within California): carts and batteries go in carry-on, never checked — lithium batteries are banned from the hold. Pressure changes can push a little oil into the mouthpiece; store upright in a rigid case and don't pre-fire.
- Legal note: transporting cannabis across state lines is federally prohibited, even between two legal states. Keep it in-state.
Troubleshooting: clogs, leaks and weak draws
- Clogged cart — warm it in your hands (never a lighter or hair dryer) for a couple of minutes, take a few gentle dry pulls without firing, then a short low-voltage puff. Preheat mode exists exactly for this.
- Leaking at the threads — usually over-tightening or heat. Snug, not cranked; wipe the 510 connection and store upright.
